When I ran my first 5k 2 weeks ago, my son was so excited about my "running race". Leading up to race day, he demonstrated for me how super fast his running shoes made him go--it's all about pushing those elbows back as fast and as hard as possible. When he finally understood that I was the only one running, he was like, " Aw! I wish I could run in a running race that was just my size." So I found one.
The Turkey Trot was a 5 miler and since I'd only ever run 3 miles, I was intimidated. So this race was all about my almost-4 year old. When we went to Run Tex to pick up his race packet, it was awesome to see him act out the excitement that I felt inside when I went to get my first race packet. There was a hip-hop inspired happy dance, complete with a hook, "I got my race numbers baybeh, my race numbers baybeh..." and so on. It was awesome. His excitement carried right over into race day. He ran the entire 1k, save a few seconds when he walked and then insisted, "No! I gotta run!" He fell twice, once at the finish-line, but bounced right back up each time and kept running. When I tell you it was pure awesomesauce watching my baby run with such determination. We hung out at the finish line later and watched the 5 milers finish the race. I think we were both equally inspired.
We're both doing our second race together Friday. He's running his second Kid's K and I'm running my second 5k on a course lit with Christmas lights Friday night. I'm so happy to have inspired an interest in running in my son. It definitely helps me to keep going. I'm hoping one day, for both of us, this infatuation with running turns into real love.

This year's national turkey goes by the name of Apple, and his feathered understudy is appropriately named Cider. They are being presented today by the Chairman of the National Turkey Federation, Yubert Envia -- and I want to just point out that Yubert seems very comfortable with
that turkey.
